Ethiopian Public Health Institute
National Reference Laboratory Building
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) was established to address the pressing health issues the country faces. With leading causes of death contributing to lower respiratory infections, HIV, AIDS, and Tuberculosis, the average life span is between 54 and 55 years. EPHI's goal is to conduct research to implement societal controls to contain widespread diseases, along with the development of traditional medicines for effective treatment.

Human Element Architects and Diversified Laboratory Sciences provided advisory and peer review for the designers of record, ZIAS Architecture.

This project posed a unique challenge in the fact that there were several research labs within the same building. Designs needed to accommodate the standard labs where General Chemistry, Nutrition, Pathology, Hematology, and Food Safety were studied.

On other floors, Research Labs required designs to support both BSL-2 and BSL-3 processes of Biomedical Research, Clinical Trials, Malaria studies, HIV/AIDS research, Influenza, Hepatitis, Polio and Tuberculosis studies.
